Studying science encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, the subject and to recognise its importance in their own lives and to society. It also provides the foundations for understanding the material world. Scientific understanding is changing our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all students should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Students will be able to see how science progresses through a cycle of hypothesis, practical experimentation, observation, theory development and review that will help them to appreciate how the complex and diverse phenomena of the natural world can be described and explained.
Students study all three science disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics at key stage 3. At key stage 4 all learners will follow either a Double Award GCSE Science or GCSE Applied Science course. For our most able and enthusiastic students there is an option to study Triple Science at GCSE which provides even more opportunities to enjoy a greater breadth of knowledge and understanding of science.
Post 16, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are offered as separate courses:
A level Biology provides students with a wide breadth of knowledge which touches on many varied aspects of a range of topics. These include the internal workings of organisms in physiology and the interdependence of living things in ecology, to social issues including human influence on the environment and the ethical considerations of genetics. The study of biology encourages an appreciation of these issues and their implications as well as providing an insight into the living world.
A level Chemistry provides a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. It encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, chemistry and to recognise its importance in their own lives and to society. Studying A level chemistry will develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other. This course will develop students’ interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, whilst developing an interest in further study.
A level Physics provides a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. It encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, physics and to recognise its importance in their own lives and to society. Learners will be introduced to a wide range of physics principles which will allow them to enjoy a positive learning experience whilst gaining an understanding of how nature operates at both microscopic and macroscopic scales.
