World Environment Day and National Fieldwork Week

World Environment Day was on Sunday 5th June 2022, and so in order to contribute to this important global event, KS3 St Cenydd pupils took action later that week.

It was a busy week in the world of geography, as it was also the Geographical Association's National Fieldwork Week. Over 2 days. pupils from 724, 712 and 823 took part in not just a litter pick, but a survey that also involved collecting data for an investigation as part of participating in NFW as well.

Pupils made predictions on which areas around the school would have the most litter and which litter types would have the highest number of items. They collected data by using tally charts and the Litterati app. They used their results to assess whether their predictions were correct. They also compared the results from before and after lunch time to see how the amount and type of litter changed throughout the day.

In total, over 1000 pieces of litter were collected, the highest number of items were from food wrappers. We understand that not all of these were dropped on purpose, some items will have blown out of bins, some items are from the Leisure Centre, and even blown in from outside of the school site, but the classes definitely felt that we need a whole school effort to change this long term.
