Aspire & Achieve

Year 10 pupils visited Llanchaiach Fawr to hear the personal testimony of Dr Martin Stern, a Holocaust survivor. Dr Martin Stern was five years old when he was taken to a concentration camp, however, was fortunate to return home to the Netherlands when, on 8 May 1945, the Soviet army entered and liberated the camp. Following a move to the UK to stay with relatives, Dr Stern learnt English and did well at school, going on to become a British citizen aged 16 before studying Medicine at Oxford University. Survivor testimonies form a key component of effective Holocaust education by putting a human face to history, and enabling students to explore its lessons in depth. We were delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to our pupils.
