Aspire & Achieve

On the eve of the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster, our Drama and Performing Arts pupils attended a performance of The Revlon Girl, a powerful and moving play by Neil Anthony Docking. The timing of the visit made the experience particularly poignant, providing an opportunity for pupils to engage with an important part of Welsh history through live theatre.

Set in the aftermath of the 1966 Aberfan disaster, the play explores the experiences of a group of bereaved mothers who meet with a representative from Revlon, a cosmetics company, as they attempt to navigate life following the tragedy. Through its sensitive portrayal of grief, friendship and the search for hope, the play offers an insight into the lasting emotional impact of the disaster on the families and community affected.

For our pupils, the performance was a valuable opportunity to experience how theatre can communicate real-life events and difficult subject matter to an audience. They were able to consider how the actors performed characterisation to convey complex emotions, as well as how dialogue, staging and the relationships between characters contributed to the impact of the production.

The visit was a meaningful experience for our young performers, combining their study of Drama with an important moment of remembrance for the Aberfan community. Seeing The Revlon Girl allowed pupils to reflect on the power of live performance to preserve memories, explore human experiences and ensure that stories from Welsh history continue to be shared with future generations.
