On 25th March 2026, students were given the exciting opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament. It was an early start for everyone, leaving school at 6:15am. After a busy journey and a quick stop at the services to stock up on snacks, students finally arrived in London.
We began by taking in some of the key sights, including Big Ben and 10 Downing Street, while learning interesting facts about the surrounding buildings. We then entered the Houses of Parliament, where students were lucky enough to visit the Robing Room, where the King prepares for the State Opening of Parliament by putting on the Imperial State Crown and ceremonial robes.
Students were able to stand in the House of Lords, observing from behind the benches (although not sitting, as these are reserved for members of the Lords). We then made our way to the House of Commons, where it was a particularly busy day as Prime Minister’s Questions had just begun. Students witnessed James Cleverly speaking, as well as the Speaker addressing an MP who had arrived late.
The tour continued with students exploring different areas of the building and learning about the struggles of the suffragettes, who fought hard to win women the right to vote. This was followed by a workshop on the “Power of Petitions”, where students developed their own policy ideas and presented arguments for why their proposed laws should be passed.
It was a fun and educational day enjoyed by all, and I am sure there will be many more visits to the capital in the future.
