Letter from the Headteacher to Parents and Carers – 17 February 2022

Dear Parent and Carers

Red weather warning – Friday 18 February 2022

The Met Office has issued a RED weather warning for parts of the Caerphilly county borough on Friday 18 February 2022.  A RED weather warning is rare and indicates a risk to life and significant disruption.

The Met Office states that Storm Eunice may cause significant disruption due to extremely strong winds and as such currently advises:

  • Flying debris resulting in danger to life
  • Damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down
  • Uprooted trees are likely
  • Roads, bridges and railway lines closed, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights
  • Power cuts affecting other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and homes, including flooding of some coastal properties

The council, as the Local Education Authority, has advised all schools in the area to switch to remote learning arrangements tomorrow (Friday 18th February) in order to keep pupils and staff safe.  We appreciate that this may cause some inconvenience, but the safety and wellbeing of the whole school community is paramount.  This decision has not been taken lightly, but red weather warnings are rare so we must respond accordingly.

As such, all pupils and staff will learn and work from home tomorrow, Friday 18 February 2022.  Our school site will be closed to all.  Remote learning will be provided for your child via their google classroom where your child’s timetabled teacher will post the work they should complete.

Changes to school operations next half term

Schools will return to using the Covid Welsh Government Local Infection Control Decision Framework from the start of next half term.  This means we will return to our ‘normal’ school session times from Monday 28 February 2022:

0830                Pupils should be on site

0835-0855       Form period

0855-0955       Lesson 1

0955-1055       Lesson 2

1055-1110       Break for all

1110-1210       Lesson 3

1210-1310       Lesson 4

1310-1355       Lunch for all

1355-1455       Lesson 5

1455                School finishes for the day with the exception of after school revision, clubs, etc.

In school we will also continue to ensure ventilation and hand hygiene.  Other mitigations remain in place as below

  1. Do not send your child to school if they have any Covid symptoms or are unwell.  Please keep them at home and book a PCR test if they have symptoms.
  2. Please ensure that your child completes a Lateral Flow Test twice a week (Monday and Thursday morning) before attending school.  This is an essential mitigation as LFTs detect positive cases who do not have any symptoms but can still infect other people.  If you would like your child to collect LFT packs from school and haven’t signed up for this as yet, please do so.
  3. Please ensure that your child brings a face covering to school.  All pupils will be strongly encouraged to wear a face coverings when moving around indoor communal areas outside of the classroom, such as corridors, where physical distance cannot be maintained.  Face coverings will no longer be routinely recommended in classrooms.
  4. Please have your child vaccinated and/or boosted as soon as they are eligible.  This is another vitally important mitigation which supports the health and wellbeing of all within our school and community.
