In the first week of the Easter Holidays, 29 intrepid St Cenydd pupils, travelled to the most northerly capital in the world- Reykjavik in Iceland. There was a jam packed itinerary where they made the most of their 4 days there.
Day 1 started at 3am and after flying from Stansted, spent some time exploring the city and settling in.
Day 2 was a tour of the South Shore; with the picturesque waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, which fall 60m off the lower part of Eyjafjallajökull, the famous volcano that erupted in 2010. Luckily, it was beautiful and peaceful for their visit. They then visited the black sand beach of Reynisfjara beach with its ferocious waves and the last stop of the day was to the awe inspiring Sólheimajökull glacier.
Day 3 was a tour of the Golden Circle- the 6,500 year old Kerid volcanic crater, filled with a frozen lake, the Geysir National Park where hot water heated by geothermal activity, burst 20m into the air every 5 minutes, next was the beautiful (and absolutely freezing) walk to Gulfoss waterfall and finally a visit to the Thingvellir National Park where the Eurasian and North American plates are moving away from each other. It was so valuable for pupils to experience the places they have learnt about in school and see what is happening first hand.
Day 4 was much more laid back, with sometime to learn about Iceland's history at the Museum of Iceland, some free time for shopping and then a trip to relax in the Blue Lagoon, which was a fabulous experience.
After all that, another early wake up call for a 6am flight home. All pupils were an absolute pleasure to spend time with, they were a credit to the school and their families. Tour guides and hotel staff commented on how well mannered they were! A huge thank you to Mr Bown, Miss Healy, Miss Stewart and Mrs Davids for taking time out of their holiday to accompany the trip.
