Aspire & Achieve

Design Technology is taught in three specialised workshops where students complete a range of design and make tasks. The ethos of the department is to teach the subject through building on current knowledge, introducing new design and making skills, whilst allowing students to progress in a caring, supportive and safe environment. Students will learn to use traditional hand tools and making techniques whilst also using modern ICT based machinery. One department aim is to develop students who are able to solve technical problems creatively and safely. At key stage 4, students have the opportunity to further their Design Technology skills by opting for Product Design for GCSE. At KS5 an A level course in Product Design is offered.

At key stage 3 student projects include making a pocket size LED torch, buggy, Welsh themed souvenir clock and an electronic night light. GCSE Product Design continues to build upon the design, making and problem solving skills covered in years 7, 8 and 9. In Year 10 the pupils increase their materials and process knowledge alongside developing their practical skills, making products in a range of different materials. In Year 11 The students complete a 30 hour exam board prescribed design and make task amounting to 50% of the GSCE final grade together with a theory exam also worth 50% . The A level course includes students designing and making a product of their own choosing.
