Aspire & Achieve

At the start of the Summer term 55 pupils ventured the long distance to London.

Whilst there they experienced a boat tour of The Thames.

Pupils enjoyed finding out about famous buildings they recognised such as Elizabeth Tower home to ‘Big Ben’ and The Tower of London. But also listening to stories about places they were less certain of. Who knew Brad Pitt has a very fancy yacht just past Tower Bridge - not to be confused with London Bridge!

After taking lots of pictures on board we started our walk along the South Bank to The Globe Theatre. Whilst this walk was a fair way it was made more interesting watching the variety of street performers out to entertain.

At The Globe, pupils were shocked when they walked in to see stunts being performed on bikes before the show started. The production of Romeo and Juliet they saw was a fully modern version using the same script. This meant bike stunts, hoodies and even mobile phones!

Pupils and staff were hooked with this imaginative retelling of the love story which focused more on gang culture than love. The consequences of knife crime were explored in an engaging yet sensitive way. This demonstrated a totally new way of looking at Shakespearean plays and really proved how relevant his works still are today.

After a trip to the gift shop and a walk across the impressive Millennium Bridge it was time to head home. A fantastic experience was had by all.
